Designing Your Life: How to Build a Well-Lived, Joyful Life

Bill Burnett & Dave Evans

Useful framework for life planning, with lots of useful advice on navigating life and career. The biggest takeaway: it's much better to decide and move on.

Key Ideas:

Gravity problems are not actionable, and cannot be solved. They can be a trap. For instance, the average poet is not paid well in today's society. This cannot be changed, so no point worrying or fighting it.

Finding a balance and coherence between work and life is important. A short exercise to try is to write a short few paragraphs on your Workview (Why work? What does good work look life?) and Lifeview (What is the purporse of life? What is a good life? etc) These two will provide a true north compass. Then, try to find coherence between the two. Repeat once a year to ensure alignment.

Reframe dysfunctional beliefs. "I should know where I am going" --> "I won't always know where I am going, but I can always know if I am going in the right direction". Another one I liked:
"To be happy, I have to make the right choice" --> "There is no right choice, only good choosing."

When ideating, make lots of ideas and use mind maps to create connections and spot key concepts. We tend to fall in love with the first idea that comes into our mind, beware.

Anchor problems are those that get us stuck as we only see a failed solution. They can create fear of perpetual failings due to the tendency to hold on the known failed solutions than to explore the unknown. Use small prototypes to build, test, iterate quickly to help here.

Plenty of jobs are not publicly listed, especially smaller companies. Write-in if interested and ask.

A few warnings. Beware phantom job postings, where a positioned is already filled but the company still has to publicise it for a certain period of time. Also beware those that take a long time to fill, the hiring process might be broken.

Keep those closest around you informed or directly involved in life design work. No man is an island.

Useful steps: "Gather and Create" --> "Narrow Down" --> "Choose" --> "LET GO AND MOVE ON". The last step applies very much to me as a blocker sometimes.
