Damn Right! - Behind the Scenes with Berkshire Hathaway Billionaire Charlie Munger

Janet Lowe

Filled with nuggets of life wisdom from probably one of the most underrated characters from the investment world. Charlie Munger provides life lessons through his own experiences and his business life, and makes this book a worthwhile read for anyone.

Key Ideas:

Play the long game with patience requires avoiding ruin, or in other words big mistakes. This is applicable for investing and in life. It is far better to be consistently compounding with patience than to leverage up and risk losing it all. Patience and consistency is key. Brick by brick, one day you'll look back and see a house that is built.

Multidisciplinary thinking reduces blind spots. Understanding the core principles from different disciplines such as Physics, Economics, Maths, Psychology, Architecture was what allowed Mr Munger to take a holistic approach to evaluate his life and business decisions. This echoes the key message in the book "Range" by David Epstein. This not only broadens one's thinking, but allows for one to understand a counterparty's point of view.

Inversion is a core mental model of Mr Munger for problem-solving.. Rather than starting with the question “How do I succeed?”, ask the inverse: “How could this fail?” The idea is simple but powerful — by identifying and avoiding the causes of failure, the probability of success increases naturally. I apply this in entrepreneurship where instead of constantly searching for the next ground-breaking idea, I focus first on removing major red flags: weak unit economics, regulatory risk, excessive complexity, or dependence on fragile assumptions. If none of these are present, steady progress over time makes success far more likely.

Life brings us all kinds of adversity, but we can overcome them and grow for the better. For Charlie, this was losing his child, a failed marriage, losing a large portion of his wealth early on and losing his eyesight. Despite all these, he managed to find love in his personal and business life, and grew to be one of the most successful investors and human beings of a generation.
